st benet’s is the nearest equivalent today to the groups of students who gathered round masters in the 13th century and combined to form the university of oxford. established in 1897 by ampleforth abbey, it is a benedictine foundation whose principal historic function was to allow its monks to be able to study for secular degrees at the university. st benet's is now open to students of all faiths, or none, the monastic office and mass are celebrated daily in the chapel. all members are welcome, but no one is obliged to attend. hospitality is important in the benedictine tradition. tutors, students and monks all eat together at one common table in the main building. formal meals are held three times a week and guests are very welcome. a second building has recently been acquired at 11 norham gardens, which will allow female undergraduate students will be accepted for the first time in 2016/17. st benet's provides a strong sense of community within the hall and full engagement in univers
