sugar coup nyc traces its lineage to this diaspora of desserts. in 1985, a chef named james swiatek married virginia velarde and they visited peru to meet virginia’s family. it was on that trip that james ate his first alfajor. upon his return to the united states, he tirelessly labored to recreate that alfajor. he passed that recipe on to his children, always paying homage to his wife’s peruvian culture. to honor james’ passing in 2008, his daughter javinia bakes to share their alfajor tradition. while her father’s recipe is a more traditional interpretation, javinia and sugar coup nyc offer an expanded variety of alfajores.
