founded in summer of 2020, backyard wildlife habitats aims to serve the piedmont region of georgia by assisting landowners with the selection and implementation of native plants as a landscaping tool, rather than the non-native - and oftentimes invasive - plant species often used in landscaping. plants typically used in landscaping come from far afield and lack the shared evolutionary history with our wildlife that native plants have. without these shared evolutionary relationships, our wildlife - insects, pollinators, birds, and so on - cannot use non-native plants in any meaningful capacity to fulfill their life cycles and reproduce. plants native to the georgia piedmont are also wildly diverse and incredibly beautiful, with a limitless array of flower forms and color, and can easily be used to fit the same landscaping needs as any ornamental. but what's the point? we have protected habitats, right? sadly, the amount of land currently protected as habitat is not enough to provide
