caviar design on a chum budget. my first job out of college was at an exhibit design company, where i learned not only how to make photostats, cut rubylith, and wax slicks from the compugraphic, but also how a fiber optic interactive map is made, that green confetti looks like duckweed, and that spray-painted foam hair curlers are a perfect facsimile for the branches of an eagle's nest. this was an excellent introduction to the concept of designer as macguyver, and i have held it to heart ever since.
