advanced placement and prior learning (appl) is part of the bcit human capital initiative within the bcit site centre of excellence. the goal of this initiative is to bridge the gaps between workplace experience and the post-secondary system in bc, thereby serving the institute’s provincial mandate to build economic capacity for british columbia. our objective is twofold: 1. to recognize and allow transferability of education across a wide range of disciplines. it is frequently recognized that multi-discipline education produces more effective and productive graduates. 2. to recognize and measure non-traditional training and experience, thereby facilitating advanced placement and credits within the post-secondary system in british columbia. the traditional approach for prior learning assessment review (plar) is to identify post-secondary equivalencies on a course-by-course basis. appl is an outcome based approach that looks at an individual's training and experience as a block and comp
