at beamline, we are developing a biopsy triaging system that can identify healthy and benign tissue specimens with high accuracy within seconds. using this system, healthy biopsies could be quickly identified, before undergoing any processing, and eliminated from the histopathology pathway, a protocol called 'resect and discard'. the current gold-standard method for diagnosing most cancers is to take a biopsy and analyse it under the microscope by a process known as histopathology. millions of tissue biopsies are collected every year, but the majority (up to 99%) are benign. however, under current protocols, all must be put through these complex and time-consuming analyses, putting a huge burden on pathology laboratories and delaying the time to diagnosis.
