Bears for Elder Welfare
bears for elder welfare is a uc berkeley-recognized student group created to improve the welfare of local elders and to cultivate elder appreciation among berkeley students. our goal is to promote elder well-being through efforts encouraging elder self-worth, dignity, independence, and mental stimulation. we achieve this by connecting students to volunteering opportunities in local senior living and day facilities in the east bay area. opportunities range from esl teaching, walking groups, lunch chats, one-on-one companionship, poetry/literature seminars, inter-generational active listening events, holiday celebrations, to concerts with elders. our club also educates our members on the issues elders face in society, politics, and healthcare. lastly, bears for elder welfare hosts our annual spring 5k for alzheimer’s: a race to remember.
