begawan foundation’s first initiative, the bali starling conservation project, was established in 1999 with the aim of saving this precious bird from the very real threat of extinction. the bali starling breeding and release program was our first initiative, commencing in 1999, breeding 97 birds from 2 imported pairs in order to reintroduce this highly endangered bird into the wild. the first releases took place on nusa penida. a healthy, but small, wild flock remains on nusa penida to this day. our current breeding centre in payangan is home to 6 breeding pairs, and 32 young birds in our socialisation enclosures, 18 of which have been bred by our local melinggih kelod breeders, the madhusuara breeders association. many of these birds will be released in the future, to be protected by the local residents. a small flock of wild-born and captive bred bali starlings is now flying in the area of our breedng and release site. a 10-week education program in local kindergartens, primary a
