Begawan Giri Estate
in 1989, the gardners found begawan while picnicking on a walk. they soon began to purchase small parcels of land which grew into the eight hectares that can be seen today, but their vision was not immediately clear. for the first years, they sat in the gardens understanding the land, terracing the side of the mountain, as well as constructing the water gardens. their vision was to create a private estate where the surrounding villages and the estate itself would support each other. the land was to be taken into consideration, to be developed without imposing, where a home is a garden, choosing materials which echo the surroundings, using recycled timber wherever possible, allowing the garden to be a home also, seen as a series of rooms. over two and a half thousand trees were planted, from flowering african tulips through to mahogany, and teak. everything was constructed by hand. the only machines used were to grade the road, and cement mixers. they created a unique private estate
