belfast’s oldest charity, the belfast charitable society, was set up in 1752 to build a poor house and infirmary which is known today as clifton house. the society ran the poor house for over 100 years, a nursing home and hospital for another century and today runs clifton house as a successful social enterprise. we provide venue hire, heritage talks and tours to a wide variety of groups and organisations.
