benchmark brewing company is dedicated to crafting “beer flavored beer”. we are family owned and operated. the ownership team is made up of native and long time san diegans who are heavily rooted in the local community. master brewer and co-founder matt akin got his start at alesmith brewing company where he worked his way up from scrubbing kegs to head brewer in under four years. matt was at alesmith for over eight years, winning many medals as well as being named small brewery and small brewer of the year at gabf in 2008. he left alesmith in 2011 with his mind set on making his own way. rachael akin brought to the team a strong background in design and management having worked for many years on interior graphics and design she has focused her skills on the design and development of the branding and brand strategy for benchmark. in addition to her professional background rachael is a bjcp certified beer judge and is currently serving as the secretary of the san diego brewers guild. th
