welcome to our world of chia! benexia® is a brand for our ingredients, derived from salvia hispanica l., and commonly called chia, an oleaginous seed that was used as food and medicine by natives from central america since about 3500 ac. in the early 1990s, chia seed was brought to industrial production by a group of scientists and agronomists, in a project sponsored by the university of arizona and the argentinean government. chia was selected for its exceptional nutritional benefits and its strong potential for the food industry. upon completion of the project, the independent growers, experts and scientists who had participated in the project decided to found a “growers’ cooperative”: functional product s.a. (fp s.a). the objective was to ensure the future of chia seed. in 2005, this group founded a company in santiago de chile, functional products trading s.a (fpt s.a), to provide the commercial, scientific and financial framework and support required by the project. benexia® is un
