benjamin buckley, london-based artist, draws in thick black lines reminiscent of and inspired by japanese woodblock prints. his compositions reveal a world in constant overflow – of architectural marvels, with americana, orientalism, commercialism, spirituality, gentrification, the ocean. the landscapes teem with potential stories, from jumbled histories, to mysterious recent events. see smoke coming from a chimney, a rubber ring sailing by, clothes hung up to dry and it seems possible that the inhabitants have just stepped out of sight, as in a western or samurai film, just before the climactic battle. this conspicuous absence lends even the most extreme and lively environments in benjamin’s work stillness and a sense of peace. indeed such significant peacefulness could be said to verge on dream-like dispassion, which certainly chimes with the wildly jaunty mish-mashing of cultures, the impossible physics, no two communities seemingly on the same planet, lapped by the same waves or un
