the global maritime industry moves 90% of international trade via 200 million unique container journeys that require more than 800 million moves across the worldwide port network. one of the largest risks in supply chain is the introduction of unmanifested cargo onto containers, causing severe customs delays and monetary costs. today, the standard security mechanism for containers is an analog sealing device that has not been upgraded since at least 2001 and is widely acknowledged by people within the industry to be grossly ineffective against tamper detection (and thus, compromising cargo security). yet, less than 5% of all container journeys are accompanied by ‘smart’ security devices. soter is a start-up that aims to help the other 95% of the container journeys stay safe.
