iris technologies is an ontario based startup seeking to improve the lives of people who have suffered from a mild traumatic brain injury (mtbi) such as a concussion. a severe concussion reduces an individual’s ability to process stimuli, such as light and noise. lcd screens emit high levels of stimuli which quickly trigger concussion symptoms in patients. the backlighting of lcd screens can also cause cognitive fatigue, headaches, nausea, and eyestrain. the prevalence of these symptoms prevents patients from interacting with lcd screens for the duration of their recovery. this reality reduces a patients quality of life during recovery and leads to a host of negative consequences. the iris solution consists of a 13 inch secondary computer monitor that is designed to be used concurrently or as a substitute to an lcd screen. the monitor uses e-paper technology, which refreshes only when the content of the screen changes. it does not have the bright flashing pixels and is not backlit.
