“the reason i paint is simple - i want to spend as much time as i can lingering in places that remind me how good it is to be alive. painting is the best way i know to do that.” though julie's subjects vary as much as the things that delight her, she has recently been focusing on large tropical florascapes that emerge from her own warm memories, a rich palette and an undulating edge quality that mimics the way the sea breeze moves its surroundings. the flowers she paints, while small in reality, loom large on the canvas and appear to strain toward the viewer in an attempt to break the bonds of their two-dimensional surface. a painter of the realist tradition, julie’s brushwork is infused with an impressionist affection that invites the viewer to knit together the forms she has painted to remember – or discover – their own place out of time.
