Spitsbergen Retraced

in july 2016, a team of five from oxford university travelled high into the arctic circle to ski from east to west across the island of spitsbergen. for the first time in ninety-three years, they retraced the route of the groundbreaking 1923 expedition that pioneered the exploration of this remote polar region. over the course of thirty-two entirely unsupported days, they located and repeated the photos from 1923, conducted scientific surveys and pursued mountaineering objectives old and new, whilst documenting it all in film. yet, perhaps most special of all was the opportunity to follow in the tracks of four extraordinary explorers. they sowed the seeds of our understanding of this wild and precious landscape and our comparatively safe enjoyment of it today. we would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to montane, inflexion and dialaflight, university of oxford, hughman's solicitors, expedition foods, msr - mountain safety research, open air, mark-making, therm-a-rest and solar pv par
