"el 29 de diciembre de 1927, se fundaba en nuestro puerto la sociedad oftalmológica de valparaíso (cuatro años antes que la sociedad chilena de oftalmología), nombre que llevaría hasta el año 2004, transformándose de paso en la primera sociedad de la especialidad en el país." el mérito es de su fundador y primer presidente de la sociedad, el dr. jean h. thierry, oftalmólogo danés nacido en suecia en 1869, que llega a chile a los 26 años, en valparaíso, desarrollando una reconocida labor en el ámbito médico. tras sucesivas reelecciones, ejerce la presidencia durante 24 años (1927-1951) dejando su cargo por motivos de salud a la edad de 82 años, siendo nombrado presidente honorario de la institución en abril de 1952. fallece en valparaíso el 10 de septiembre de 1958 a la edad de 89 años. según consta en el libro de actas de la sociedad los objetivos planteados por esta naciente institución, son: 1.- "contribuir al estudio de la ciencia oftalmológica por medio de conferencias, demostracio
