originally called the graduate student society (gss), the gss was recognized formally in 1982 as the autonomous representative body for all students within the school of graduate studies. in 1998, the faculty of law formally severed ties with the alma mater society and joined the gss, which was subsequently re-named the society of graduate and professional students (sgps) to better reflect the diversity of students within the society. in 2009, the education student society seceded from the ams and joined the sgps. the society has an elected executive, many hired positions, and acts as a representative of graduate and professional students to queen's administration. furthermore, the sgps offers its members a variety of services including: - insurance for health and dental costs - a peer support service named the student advisor program to help with the diverse range of issues graduate and professional students experience - social, networking, and athletic events to foster relationships
