in the year 1871 the society of petroleum engineers (spe) began working within the american institute of mining engineers (aime). this institute’s field of expertise was the development of mineral, metal and energy source production means using engineering methods. a research committee was formed in order to conduct studies on petroleum and gas sources. the founding of this research committee was another step towards the formation of what we know as spe today. this committees progress in the petroleum and gas field led to a rapid increase in its popularity amongst its members until in 1960 the society of petroleum engineers (spe) was founded and grew multi-dimensionally over the years that came to pass to become one of the most powerful societies in the upstream oil industry, conducting its affairs on a international level.
