the original american graphic design organization. the aiga has its roots in the sp. founded february 14th, 1905, the sp is a not-for-profit, private society. membership is by peer nomination, and election. the society meets nine months of the year for dinner and lectures. current & past members include many of the most significant practitioners of the late 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. individuals like d.b. updike, bruce rogers, w.a. dwiggins (who coined the term "graphic designer" as a member), john howard benson, john e. benson, and nicolas benson, matthew carter, david godine, lance hidy, scott-martin kosofsky, barry moser, roderick, and stephen stinehour, hermann zapf, and others. the society is governed by a pro-bono council who server two season terms. the society does not hire personnel, and does not conduct business in a commercial sense.
