sofia promotes development aid projects in the south of the world and builds awareness of developing countries in the west. education and health are our core interests, through which we try to contribute to reaching the un millennium development goals. sofia is therefore more than the acronym of our office’s full name. in greek sofia means wisdom. our ambition is to stimulate people in the developing world to acquire sofia – knowledge, and the capacity to make due use of it – so that they themselves can change their situation for the better. our values include respect for local cultures, efficiency, transparency and continuity. almost all our project managers are indigenous to the country where they live and work. they spend their lives with the poor, often in remote places. the donations we receive go entirely to their activities and are not being used for overhead. systematic reporting explains what exactly happens with the funds.
