software id services provides the missing piece to the puzzle of software asset management (sam). the software discovery tool industry as a whole approached exe file identification from the wrong direction: they required customers to use their it staff, without training, each with their own set of rules or no rules, to take on the difficult task of adding and maintaining databases of applications with disappointing results. these efforts ignored the security risks associated with lesser known commercial shareware, freeware and open source publishers. the results of this are inevitable and predictable: user experience ranges from expending excessive time and costs to incomplete or inaccurate information. we know of large institutions that have over one million files that were unidentified. we worked with a large midwest teaching hospital that thought they had 1,500 publishers in their environment - because of our work, we discovered 7,500 distinct publishers.
