Spalding University

spalding university represents a legacy of education established in 1814 by the sisters of charity of nazareth. in 1829, the legislature of the commonwealth of kentucky granted the institution, then known as nazareth academy, a broad-ranging charter to confer academic degrees. in 1920 the sisters of charity of nazareth founded nazareth college occupying the historic tompkins-buchanan-rankin mansion at 851 south fourth street, thus establishing the louisville campus. since january 1, 1984, the independent liberal arts institution that began as nazareth academy near bardstown, kentucky, has been known as spalding university, honoring the roots established by mother catherine spalding, founder of the sisters of charity of nazareth and who is also regarded as the founder of social work in the louisville area. today this urban, co-educational institution offers more than two dozen degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level. we continue the mission began by the sisters of
