in a radio interview on december 26th 2010, chinese premier wen jiabao promised that china would start construction of 10 million affordable homes in 2011 and a total of 36 million within the next five years. to make it more visual: 36 million apartments are: 20 developments of 3600 apartments per city x 500 cities. we see this as a moment where we can gain knowledge of mass production on a scale that can no longer be controlled by one organization. we question how the classical talents of architects (planning, design, and quality control) can be used when faced with this reality. we have transformed the ambition of the chinese government into a virtual project that empowers the local ambitions and needs. we find answers from planning to construction level and come up with solutions that can be directly initiated by any of the involved parties and based on real situations and legal regulations.
