Spectrum Adapted Music

a piano teaching method and materials for individuals who learn differently. the sam method used shapes, colors and keyboard stickers to teach basic music concepts and note reading, which are eventually faded so all learners can read music on a grand staff. developed for individuals who learn best by experiencing music concepts rather than by having them explained. sam consists of a primer (which introduces the concept of a note on a page representing a note on the keyboard and begins to develop fine motor and visual tracking skills) and three levels. level 1 consists of six music books, level 2 consists of four music books, and level 3 consists of two music books. the materials have been written using the professional music publishing software finale. the objective is for students to move on to the edna-mae burnam piano materials at the end of level 3. developed by an aba trained professional for her low-verbal son with autism. sam is currently certifying music therapists to teach the
