i 1931 byggede de danske spritfabrikker et stort fabriksanlæg i den vestlige del af aalborg ned til limfjorden. fabrikken blev tegnet af arkitekt alfred cock-clausen og anses i dag af kulturstyrelsen for at være et hovedværk i dansk fabriksarkitektur. i 2012 køber norske arcus de danske spritfabrikker og i 2015 flyttes den resterende del af produktionen. samme år blev området fredet. området kendes i dag som spritten, og det bliver også det officielle navn for området fremadrettet. i de kommende år omdannes spritten til en helt ny bydel, der i særklasse vil være præget af kulturarv, kunst, arkitektur og gastronomi.
