for 25 years i have worked on the front line with start-up and small businesses in the uk, where the casualty rate is over 50% of new companies dying before year three – horrendous. even though new companies know that effective marketing is vital for their survival and growth, most say that they find publications on the subject boring and not relevant. since the beginning of 2008 i have trialled a new concept in the way marketing is explained. i have done this through lectures in the universities of newcastle upon tyne, northumbria and sunderland, as well as to business clubs and as a guest speaker at conferences. my concept explains the relevance of the subject in a practical way, with real life examples from other small businesses, giving tips and techniques that any company can use. i twin this with a high level of humour and as such it has become known as: stand-up marketing. this new approach aims to give start-up and small businesses a heightened understanding of who they are, ho
