the staten island reading association (sira) is a nonprofit organization which promotes literacy throughout the community. it is chartered by the international reading association and is a local council of the new york state reading association. sira's mission: ~stimulate and encourage growth in the study of reading instruction and materials ~stimulate and encourage a love and appreciation of independent reading ~provide opportunities to promote literacy in the community through the exchange of information on the improvement of reading ~alert those responsible for the teaching of reading to the latest research findings which could have a positive influence on teaching practices ~provide a forum for professional growth and development in the area of reading membership is open to all persons engaged in education at any school, district or cultural institution, to parents, and to all others interested in the purpose of the association. your membership will contribute to: -providing books
