my name is steven chen and i'm a robert w. woodruff scholar studying chemistry at emory university in atlanta, georgia, u.s.a.. i'm also an avid photographer and train enthusiast. growing up in milwaukee, wisconsin, i became fascinated with the trains that ran through town and the history of the old soo line railroad and its predecessor, the milwaukee road. i got my first camera, a small point-and-shoot, at age ten and began documenting the myriad of locomotives that ran past the tracks near my house. i crossed the canadian pacific railway line daily to and from my high school at the time, lending me endless opportunities to explore trains and their history. my photographs serve multiple purposes. they document unique railway movements, portray the scenery and romance of being trackside, showcase the rich history of railroads, and lend pleasing sights for many. trains have always evoked feelings of power, romance, mystery, travel, and history, and i aim to capture that in our modern wo
