het project toen modern, nu een monument sluit aan bij de hernieuwde aandacht voor historische interieurs. zo inventariseert en onderzoekt het gelders genootschap sinds 2019 historische interieurs in de achterhoek, liemers (in oost-gelderland) en friesland. door het vertellen van het verhaal over de historische interieurs hopen zij dat eigenaren, beheerders en gebruikers hier zorgvuldig mee om zullen gaan. ook de recente vermelding van interieurs in de erfgoedwet is een erkenning voor de groeiende aandacht voor de binnenkant van monumentalegebouwen. naast aandacht voor het interieur gaat het project toen modern, nu een monument ook over de cultuurhistorische ontwikkeling van de omgeving van het woningbouwcomplex.
