fighting illegal competition in the accommodation rental market by housing corporations and organisations with ties to the city of amsterdam. social housing is illegaly rented out per night. the city of amsterdam is not willing to stop this practice so far. at the same time private house owners and small enterprises renting out free sector housing have been facing city officials breaking in to their properties intimidating tenants (i.e. expats/ internationals) over the past 5 years. lessors were forced into expensive legal procedures. the world upside down: squatting is still allowed in the netherlands. the first thing squatters do after breaking in to an apartment is to call the police to get protection!
