stichting surant is in de jaren ‘80 ontstaan uit een vrijwilligersinitiatief van een groep vrienden die hadden opgemerkt dat gedetineerden van antilliaanse en surinaamse afkomst in de bijlmer bajes behoefte hadden aan meer sociaal contact. en zo ontstond de bijlmerbajesbezoekgroep. sinds 2007 is het vrijwilligersinitiatief overgegaan in stichting surant. behalve het bezoeken van gedetineerden en tbs-patiënten biedt de stichting sinds 2007 ook zorg op alle leefgebieden na detentie.
