our mission: to provide programs and services through community-wide partnerships that help young children learn to read. our vision: all children read. our programs: strong start’s flagship letters, sounds and words program targets children in senior kindergarten and grade 1 who do not read at the expected level. this program uses short games and activities to help young children recognize letters, learn the sound each letter makes, learn words by sight and learn how to build a word using the sounds of its letters. children are selected by their classroom teacher and matched with trained community volunteers for one-on-one, in-school coaching sessions. our get ready for school program helps prepare children who may be disadvantaged for either economic reasons or who are learning english as a second language, acquire literacy skills before entering junior kindergarten. the curriculum was carefully designed with an intensive focus on early literacy skills (vocabulary development, phonem
