as a professional in higher education and a veteran of the united states army, i have taken a special interest in addressing the needs of the current generation of veterans attending the nation's institutions of higher education (ihe). of particular interest is assessing the health needs of student veterans - both physical and emotional/mental. in order for military service-members and veterans to have a postive transition from military to academic life and to be successful students, it is vital that ihe understand and address military service-members and student veterans unique experiences and needs. higher education professionals on both the academic and student affairs side must develope mechanisms, based upon research and best practices, that will: create a campus environment that is both supportive and friendly to military service-members and student veterans. educate faculty and staff regarding the unique circumstances of the military service-members and student veteran's experie
