subsea deployment system ltd. was founded in 2008 to develop a novel method of transporting and installing large subsea structures using a vessel of opportunity rather than a heavy lift vessel (hlv). the sds has been developed for the transportation and installation of large structures (300 to several 1000 tonnes) in water depths in excess of 50m, without the need for a large offshore crane vessel. it does not completely replace the need for an offshore crane vessel but it enables even the smallest crane vessels to install very large subsea structures in hostile environments. the system utilises a deployment vessel (sdv) which consists of solid buoyancy modules mounted on structural steel frames. the amount of buoyancy is sufficient to render the combined sdv and payload slightly positively buoyant.
