a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization: 25 years in 2015! in the summer of 1989 a small group of traditional jazz devotees gathered for a common purpose: to create an organization dedicated to preserving jazz and advocating for this only true american art form. as a matter of course, the promotion of jazz included not only staged events, but also opportunities for aspiring young area musicians to perform. a scholarship program was established as a way of giving back to the community in the form of financial assistance to young musicians, bands and school music programs. the first suncoast dixieland jazz classic was held at the historic belleview biltmore hotel and spa in june 1990 , the same year that the united states congress recognized the origins of jazz as a uniquely american contribution to music. although the first suncoast dixieland jazz classic featured mostly local groups, the event was immediately successful and remained at the biltmore for three years. because event patronage
