Superconductors Education

this project began three years ago when our team of designers partnered with north elementary in lansing, mi. the teachers expressed frustration at the lack of quality stem educational materials accessible to low-income schools like theirs. inspired by the need for affordable stem teaching tools, we developed superconductors (née maglev). each year since, we have gone to north and facilitated a half-day workshop using the superconductors platform. the superconductors kit consists of a pair of 12-foot model magnetic levitation train tracks. students use basic craft supplies to build, test, and race their own trains. the lesson can take anywhere from two hours to a few weeks. it teaches concepts such as innovation, engineering, and design in a way that feels more like playing than learning. this experiential learning is accessible for north's many english language learners and cost effective for the low-income school. this summer, we worked towards increasing superconductors's impact and
