over the past decade, the burkart lab has developed several technologies to study secondary metabolites and their producer organisms. our area of focus is the enzymatic megasynthases responsible for synthesizing fatty acids, polyketides, and nonribosomal peptides. using various chemical, biochemical, and proteomic techniques, we are uncovering protein•protein interactions that occur between domains of these enzymatic complexes. applications include drug discovery, renewable energy, and biomaterials.
