East Manchester Neighbourhood Regeneration

east manchester is home to the neighbourhoods of ancoats, miles platting, beswick, openshaw, clayton, newton heath and gorton. in the 19th and early 20th century, it was home to the traditional manufacturing industries, such as coal, textiles, chemicals, steel, and engineering, along with providing homes to the huge work forces for these sectors. between 1970 and 1985, 60% of the area’s economic base, along with over 33,000 jobs, were lost in that period. the population declined, as did skills and the demand for housing. over a fifty-year period, the area’s population fell from 164,000 in 1951 to 62,000 in 2001. this combination of employment and population loss left the area with a large amount of vacant, underused land and buildings, along with a low value, low demand housing market. the physical environment suffered, as did local facilities such as shops, post offices, banks and schools. neighbourhoods became dilapidated and ignored. now quickly becoming an area renowned for its bus
