ecoworks international (ewi) is a nonprofit based in miami, florida, working in haiti since january 2009. ewi’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty through a comprehensive and integrated approach based on four pillars: • economic development • education • healthcare • environment economic development includes a 20,000 chicken egg farm, an entrepreneurship center, a fruit-tree nursery and a vocational school. buttressing the diverse economic initiatives are a montessori school for 200 children, a regional healthcare center and a reforestation program. ewi’s partner community is the commune of ganthier comprising 45 villages and a total population of 80,000. in 2010, ewi temporary closed its programs and moved all its resources to the bernard mevs hospital in port-au-prince to shoulder the haitian medical teams in their efforts to save lives following the devastation earthquake.
