the edmund burke school is a progressive private school serving students in grades 6 - 12 in the greater washington dc area. burke's mission is to provide guided, challenging, personal learning to a wide diversity of students. burke was founded in 1968, its name coming from the british political philosopher edmund burke's declaration that "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." burke strives to motivate its students to take charge of their learning, both in the classroom and as people. students are on a first-name basis with faculty and staff, and there is real community, within the building and without.
