the company was established in 1962 by frank egan who saw enormous opportunity in australia and who believed that there was a need for specialist heavy machinery, plant hire and skilled operators to assist construction companies with the delivery of a large range of infrastructure and construction projects throughout australia. frank egan migrated from ireland in the 1950’s and began working in the earth moving industry, later establishing egans contractors in 1962. the company started with one grader and worked predominately for leighton holding (formerly leighton brothers and thiess brothers.) one of the earliest notable infrastructure projects egans worked on was the melbourne underground loop authority from the inception of the project in 1971. an egans excavator dug the first sod for the project, which was to take a further six years to complete. the company also had two backhoes, roughriders and steelwell cranes working on the project. after the underground project was completed,
