the island institute works to sustain maine’s island and remote coastal communities. our core program areas—including economic development, education, community energy, marine resources, and media—are driven by the requests of community members themselves. our core commitment to the islands of maine includes sharing what works among these diverse communities and beyond. we work in six main program areas: community development, economic development, education, energy, marine resources, and media. in each of these areas, we seek to support local efforts that ensure maine's island communities continue to be healthy, economically viable places in which to work and live. in the 30 years since the institute was founded, its staff has grown from two to nearly 50. the annual operating budget of the organization has grown from $20,000 to over $5.5 million, and it has made a significant impact in maine island communities. today, under the leadership of president rob snyder, the island institute’
