italiano doc for years, qingdao's foodies and winos have had to trek to beijing or shanghai to truly enjoy a tipple - wine shops missed the mark when it came to the overall experience, and restaurants didn't seem to know enough about the wine they served. but chef stefano (of napoli, who won best wine list last year) has been aiming to change all of that for some time, and this autumn his tireless efforts finally came to fruition. at his new italiano doc, legendary italian wines take centre stage, and the pastas and entrees are typically included with the price of the bottle. it's simply brilliant - other restaurants tend to treat wine as an afterthought, even if it's the dearest item on the menu. at italiano doc, you choose your wine (barossa, anyone?) at remarkably reasonable prices starting below ¥200; it will be presented true to form; and, as if by magic, italian antipasti will begin to arrive. this place is a hit. the wine experience is finally right, finally whole. but book in a
