i'm interested in "perfection" with every artist i work with. in the age of beat detective and autotune, the word "perfection" is usually taken to mean "abuse of software" but that's not what i'm talking about here. i'm talking about a song, a performance, music being as it should be. the right arrangement, the right musicians, the right room, the right mix. that's true perfection. when i'm lucky enough to be allowed into an artist's creative space, i treat it delicately. i listen to what they want but i also have the distinct advantage of not being the artist. i have an outside perspective and i am able to push them when they have more to give and gently steer them back on track when they chase their tail trying to get that one note in tune, instead of singing the song with conviction. chris jacobie san antonio-based producer, bassist, mix engineer
