Jamaican Youth Empowerment Through Culture, Arts and Nationalism (Jayecan)

jayecan, stands for jamaican youth empowerment through culture arts and nationalism. it started in december of 2013 by three university students. the original idea was a very far fetched approach which involved the creation of several youth development centers across the island that would be led by youths. the reality hit home when the founding members drafted a proposal and submitted it to an international social enterprising agency called echoing green who turned down the idea. the disappointment never really did affect the group’s progress as attempts were made to revisit the blue prints. by early 2014, the founders, abrahim simmonds, alex sterling and ansel pulchan, met again to reconstruct the concept of jayecan and how it would operate as a youth led initiative. they concluded that jayecan would operate under four arms: the arts, culture, education and volunteerism. after this was finalized, volunteers had already begun to offer up themselves for service. today, jayecan creates t
