jazz in available light is the lifelong photography work of veryl oakland, a california-based jazz photographer and chronicler who traveled the globe capturing shots of music’s masters in a wide variety of settings: under the spotlight, in their homes, and far from the stage, all using only “available light” – no flash. oakland has written about his moments with these jazz greats in his photo-journal featuring more than 300 photographs, entitled jazz in available light: illuminating the jazz greats from the 1960s, ‘70s & ‘80s (foreword by quincy jones). an active photojournalist for more than a quarter of a century, he closely collaborated with the renowned german critic/producer joachim-ernst berendt on many of his jazz projects, plus, regularly contributed works to the major worldwide jazz publications, including swing journal, (tokyo), jazz magazine (paris), and down beat (us). please contact alexis@jazzinavailablelight.com regarding his photography, gallery shows, or publicati
