at jd+a’s core is a synthesis of community planning and architecture with an overlay of sustainability, connectivity, context, the third place, the red bench, meaningful open space, and cultural infrastructure. jd+a has developed comprehensive processes to analyze a project site to extrapolate the story, history, and essence of the land in its context. from this foundation of understanding and meaning, the design team is able to develop a contextually responsive design solution to integrate into the community. the studio’s passion is rooted in creating a series of experiences for the residents and stakeholders of the community through effective hardscape and landscape design, pedestrian thresholds, and opportunities for the red bench. the red bench is a human-scale icon that the community can identify as a cultural landmark in their neighborhood. it can be a bench, fountain, or public art; it’s not the scale of the icon that matters, but the significance to the community.
