john norman lindley was the first elected chief of the westbank indian band in 1963, now recognized as westbank first nation. during his term as chief, we were exposed to a life of political awareness, of coming together; nationhood. he, along with other leaders of the syilx nation believed in making and taking a stand for the betterment of the people, to create a strong future and together with supporters closed the vernon department of indian affairs. it was a huge critical step for our nation, a step towards self reliance, unity and strength. we were there, we watched, participated and we learned what strong voices, strong people with the passion of creating a strong future were, knowing we were gathering tools, values, ideals, strength and pride - all critical for a positive vibrant strong successful future for everyone. chief lindley was a man of honor who believed in the concept of family, the honor of our ancestry by the continuance of both ancestral and english names for his c
